Curriculum mapping is the process of looking at the big picture of your child’s education and creating a flexible plan for what they will learn, when they will learn it, and how different curriculum resources work together. For homeschool families, it can be a helpful tool for making sure important skills and concepts are covered without feeling like you have to recreate a traditional school classroom at home.

Here's the important part: you don't have to map everything!

For most homeschool families, detailed curriculum mapping is not necessary during the elementary years (K-4) when children are learning foundational skills such as reading and writing and learning through play.

As students approach middle school and high school, however, mapping becomes increasingly helpful. It allows you to look ahead, identify prerequisites, plan for more advanced coursework, and make sure your student's education plan is built toward their individual goals.

What Does Curriculum Mapping Look Like in Homeschool?

A homeschool curriculum map may help you:

See the big picture — Identify the skills and subjects your student needs to cover over several years rather than planning one year at a time.

Choose curriculum with confidence — Compare curriculum options and determine whether they actually cover the material your student needs and find options that are fit your families budget and learning styles.

Identify gaps or repetition — See where important concepts may be missing or where multiple resources are covering the same material unnecessarily.

Plan for middle and high school — Make sure courses are taken in an appropriate sequence and that prerequisites are completed before more advanced coursework.

Incorporate Dual Enrollment — low cost college credit during high school years is an advantage academically and financially, plan for enrolling in dual credit as soon as your student is eligible.

Work toward future goals — Plan education around your student's interests, college plans, career goals, dual enrollment, or other post-secondary opportunities.

Know what comes next — Create a clear progression from one course or level to the next without having to figure everything out at the last minute.
